Heathrow Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world today. At the moment, it has around 67 million passengers every year and one-third of these passengers are only in Heathrow for a stopover as they travel to their destination. As a result, Heathrow is capable of catering to the needs of the passing passengers and it can handle connecting flights very well in its four terminals. The first terminal of the airport is used for domestic flights in the UK or other cities in Europe. Terminal 3 takes care of long-distance destinations like Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Terminal 4 has the same purpose as well. Meanwhile, Terminal 5 is used solely by British Airways. One of these days you might find yourself in Heathrow so here are a few important things that you need to remember.
Traveling To and From the Airport
There are two reliable ways to reach the city center of London. You can opt to use the Tube or the Heathrow Express Train. The express train is a little bit more expensive compared to the Tube but it is recommended for layovers that are below six hours. There are buses too that can take you to the nearby hotels should you choose to go to one. You can find the shuttle buses right outside the terminals. If you need to go to Terminal 3 from Terminal 1, you can simply walk but if you wish to go to Terminals 4 & 5, you can use the free buses and trains. If you will be headed to other places that is not in London, then your best bet would be to take a taxi.
Regardless of your budget, you will be able to find an accommodation in one of the many hotels within the airport and nearby area as well. You can find Yotel in Terminal 4. It is a hotel that is pod-style and it looks like the first class airline cabin. You have the option of renting a room for a certain number of hours which is perfect if you have a layover and badly need to get some sleep. But if you intend to stay overnight, you can stay at the Sofitel Heathrow. You can directly access it from Terminal 5 and use the courtesy train if you need to transfer from the other terminals. There are cheaper options too nearby the airport like the Holiday Inn and Premier Inn. Travel time to these inns take about five minutes only.
Passing the Time
You will never run out of shops to visit while at the Heathrow Airport because it is like a huge shopping mall where you can get bargains that are tax-free. There are so many shops to choose from to shop for clothes, shoes, electronics and so on. There is a wide range of food choices as well. If unwinding is what you want to do, get a day pass to get access to Sofitel’s spa.
Heathrow does not have free wireless internet though. You will need to pay to get connected. But if pay to get access to the executive lounge, you can get the complimentary access to the internet.
Being stranded or having a stopover at Singapore’s international airport is not something that many people would be bothered about. As they say, Changi International Airport is a destination in itself and a few hours to spare is probably not enough to enjoy everything that the airport has to offer. Try picturing this out: starting your day at the airport with a quick workout in the gym facility and then freshening up by taking a quick dip in the pool’s airport. If you are in for a bit of relaxation, you can enjoy a massage treatment in the spa. Then for a little sightseeing, you can visit the butterfly garden or the other gardens that you can find in this bustling airport.
It is this airport that virtually started the concept of having an airport that is a destination itself. Even though Singapore is a small city-state that only has around five million residents, it has managed to build a reputation for itself as an important transit link to Europe, Australia and Asia.
The airport itself has three terminals and a budget terminal as well. It offers amenities to its passing travelers that other airports have yet to think of. Here are some of the things that you need to know about the airport and the things you can do while there:
Changi Airport is only eleven miles away from the center of the city. There are many ways that one can go to and from the airport. These options include: shuttle buses, MRT, car rentals and taxis. For the latter option, you can reach most areas of the city for less than $20 USD.
There are a lot of hotels in and around the airport. The Crowne Plaza can be found in Terminal 3. Changi Airport is one of the few airports that offer transit hotels and full hotels without going past the immigration counter. Yes, you got that right. If you go past it to retrieve your luggage then you won’t be able to stay in these hotels any longer. Each of the airport terminals has a transit hotel but if you want to access the rooftop pool, visit the transit hotel in Terminal 1.But if you do not want to pay for hotels, there are napping areas in the airport too. The napping areas are equipped with lounge chairs that has alarms that vibrate to help ensure that you can wake up prior to your flight.
You can also find massage and shower facilities in the transit lounges in the terminals. You can even get a free fifteen-minute foot massage. You can also find the usual boutiques that are duty-free and other shopping choices. Among other things, you can find drug stores, a salon and changing rooms that parents with infants can use. There are many food choices in the airport too. If you want to experience an authentic Singaporean meal then go for the food gallery in Terminal Three which is open twenty-four hours a day. Visitors can also enjoy the free Playstation and Xbox consoles in the 3rd level of Terminal 2. You can also find a movie theater there.
